WRIST ANGIOGRAM (RADIAL ANGIOGRAPHY)

Wrist angiogram, also known as radial angiography, is a control procedure applied to visualize the vessels when coronary artery disease is suspected or hardening of the vessel is observed. This procedure is suitable for everyone except patients with arm trauma and undergoing dialysis.

Advantages of Wrist Angiogram

Wrist angiogram technique is a much more comfortable procedure compared to inguinal angiography. Before the procedure, the patient does not need to be hospitalized, kept under active surveillance. In addition, operational risks such as bleeding, aneurysm and damage are less. After the procedure, the patient can walk home and eat while sitting. It is not necessary to use a sandbag as in inguinal angiography.

Pre-Radial Angiography

Before the angiography procedure, the individual should avoid all food for 2 hours. After the hospitalization procedures are completed, the patient is prepared for the radial angiography. If there are drugs used by the patient, the doctor should be informed.

Treatment

Local anesthesia is preferred when applying the wrist angiogram technique. As part of the technique, which is a 10-15 minute procedure, a 3 mm incision is made on the patient’s wrist. With the small size of the incision, the risk of complications, pain and pain is minimized. It is advanced through the sheath towards the heart vessels with the help of a catheter. A dye called contrast is given. The contrast agent together with the X-ray creates a colored film. Thus, occlusions and narrowings in the vessels become detectable. The sheath is removed and a transparent bandage is attached to the wrist.

If the stenosis is at a critical level, it is possible to apply stent therapy in the same session. The most important part after the procedure is the compression of the opened incision. If this hole is not closed well, problems may occur.

Post Radial Angiography

After the procedure, the patient rests in a separate room for 1 hour. Afterwards, a control appointment is made and discharged. Before discharge, the drugs to be used are determined with the doctor.

After angiography, the patient should not lift anything heavy during the day and should not force arm too much. It is necessary not to strain for 3-4 days so that the entrance site does not bleed. The patient can take a bath the day after the procedure, but should not enter the pool, tub, jacuzzi or sea for a week.

It is recommended to drink plenty of water so that the intravenous contrast agent can be removed from the body. After the procedure, the activity level can be increased gradually. After 24-48 hours, the patient can return to work life.
