Gastric Sleeve Surgery
This operation also known as Sleeve Gastrectomy is a way of surgically shrinking the stomach, patients’ stomachs are made into a tube and the stomach works like an organ connected to the esophagus.
In this operation, surgeons remove part of patient’s stomach and join the remaining pieces together to create a new stomach or “sleeve” the size of a banana.
The fact that weight loss takes a long time by normal ways has led to an increase in the demand for sleeve gastrectomy surgeries today.
Before performing batriatic surgery, at the first stage, it is checked whether the patient is ready and whether there are any health problems that will prevent patient from entering the surgery process. Pre-operative tests and exams may include sleep study, EKG, chest X-ray, lab tests, and seeing an anesthesiologist.

Treatment
Gastric Sleeve Surgery is performed with a closed technique and under the anesthesia. In general, the doctor makes 4 or 5 holes in the patient’s abdomen, and this depends on the team of experts and the patient. However, with the rapid advancement of technology, there are many possibilities to perform this surgery in a more practical way and with fewer holes.
When performing sleeve gastrectomy, the surgeon staples the stomach vertically and removes the larger, curved part of the stomach, creating a narrow sleeve. A calibration tube with the diameter of the esophagus is placed at the gastric inlet in order not to make mistakes and shrink the stomach more than necessary during the Sleeve Gastrechromia procedure. The stomach is shrinked like the continuation of the esophagus through this calibration tube, and excessive stenosis and obstruction are prevented. This tube is removed after surgery.
After Gastric Sleeve Surgery
The patient kept under doctor’s supervision for 2-3 days and then if the condition is appropriate, the patient can do daily activities and return to social life as usual. Patients need at least seven days to return to work. It is very important for the patient to follow the nutritional diet program that has been given by the doctor. This is a factor that determines the postoperative success. Patients need to keep themselves away from doing sports or extreme physical activities.
Success Rate After Gastric Sleeve Surgery
The success rate of sleeve gastrectomy surgeries is quite high. After the surgery, patients lose 70%-80% of their excess weight within 1 year. Many patients are able to keep their ideal body weight within 10 years following the surgery and do not experience any health problems that are the effects of surgery. This surgical method give the opportunity to achieve a healthy ideal weight effectively and in a shorter period of time compared to diet programs.
